The parents don't really want to expend the effort to manage their children's education. Those few that truly want that responsibility are homeschooling.

What I see happening is parents quickly tiring of the job and turning it over to Green Dot, who is waiting in the wings. Once you remove a public school from the public system, it has no defenses and individual, ignorant parents are far easier to disempower than a school system.

I always went to parent teacher conferences. I always supported what the teachers said or did. I never would have presumed to think I was capable of teaching my kids everything they needed to know in every class through grade 12 before they went on to college.

I think it all very much depends on which community is seeking a charter school. Charter schools are nothing new in California - they have been around for at least a decade. When the Charter school is sought out and put into place by people in small communities, it will probably work. If in your typical back stabbing, large suburban area, it might not. But a lot of little enclaves of community exist, with people who are part of a very together community and who really will do whatever it takes. There is such a group here in Lake County Calif., and also several such communities in Marin. (Especially West Marin which is more rural..)

I don't care how many charter schools arise as long as they don't get taxpayer money. That takes away funds from public schools that never make their way back to them. The charter companies are getting rich, and even some local charters are no longer answerable to local district school boards.

Charters shouldn't even be allowed. You want private schools, set them up, but don't use taxpayer money to do it.

Charters were designed to do an end run around vouchers when those proved unpopular with the public.
