Help! Art badly needed!

Now this is a cool picture if I do say so my self.

The stylized Guy Fawkes mask has become something of a mascot for the occupy movement. The idea of course is a hope in the replication of the end of the movie, where the public turn out in mass to stand united against tyranny.

This is rather interesting if you give the mater some thought, because the movie V from which this iconic image is taken from, V is quite clearly a terrorist and a murderer. This doesn't appear to be far removed from the real Guy Fawkes, who is an equally controversial figure.

I have nothing against the Guy Fawkes/"V" symbolism. Indeed, I find it to be quite reflective of my views as a progressive. Even the controversial nature serves as a strong reminder that our positions are not simple, and that we too could become terrorists; rather by crossing the red line, or should we cross the line that we should cross.

But I do have one problem with it. It's more of a British symbol, rather than an American one. On as I found to be the case when I took this picture, one that represents Kansas. Indeed, Kansas has another iconic figure in her history that resembles Guy Fawkes in many ways. And that would be John Brown.


He too is a controversial figure, much as Guy Fawkes was, with one central diffidence. While we can not condone Brown's methods, we can not help but admire what it was that he fought, and ultimately sacrificed for... the abolition of slavery. Brown is some one that V probably would have admired.

When I took this picture of V, what I wished for at that moment, was for some one to do to John Brown what V did for Guy Fawkes.
