Jane Fonda sets the record straight
Somehow it is appropriate that Jane Fonda has chosen now, as we are sunk by national morass of lies, to tell the truth about her visit to Hanoi. It seems to me we , as a nation, are badly in need of truth. It can even be said that we need truth more than money.
http://janefonda.com/the-truth-about-my-trip-to-hanoi "But these lies have circulated for almost forty years, continually reopening the wound of the Vietnam War and causing pain to families of American servicemen. The lies distort the truth of why I went to North Vietnam and they perpetuate the myth that being anti-war means being anti-soldier." More at link! |

RE: Jane Fonda sets the record straight
That's a great post, thanks!
I encourage all Vietnam vets to travel to Vietnam. It is a young country (half the population is under 30 years of age) and no one dies as a result of war. There are still lots of unexploded ordnance. The number of bombs we dropped on that country exceeded all the bombs we dropped during World War II. Over a million Vietnamese died in the war, while only 58,148 GIs were killed. Who bore the brunt of this brutal war of choice? A President, any President, who maintains that he is above the law -- and repeatedly violates the law -- thereby commits high crimes and misdemeanors. Elizabeth Holtzman January 12, 2006 |

RE: Jane Fonda sets the record straight
I signed it and told her (in an added comments section) how I never held her culpable but admired her for her anti-war stance. (I'm a former U.S. Marine and Vietnam vet). I also told her how I had the same love and respect for the Dixie Chicks in their time.
On a side note, I used to meet some people and hold up my hands like a balance scale. I would then utter, "Stones or Beatles?" and move my hands up and down as though weighing in. Lately it's become, "Jane Fonda or Dixie Chicks?" I put the same challenge to you all. |

RE: Jane Fonda sets the record straight
I've always had a lot of respect for Jane Fonda, and her antiwar stances haven't changed over the years. Here's a picture I took of her at the rally in DC in January '07.
