Re: The Crisis
Mike,
I feel all the jobs creation ideas fail to acknowledge some of the serious exigencies that face America economically. (And by extension, the world). 1) Will America build a long term economy on the supposition that we will need to plan for an oil scarce/post-oil world? 2) Will Americans admit that the investment models of suburbia, imperialism, mass consumption, and monoploy capitalism are neither sustainable nor conducive to democracy? 3) Investments in infrastructure are pointless if they do not move America away from the automobile and into self-sufficient, local economies based on walking and environmentally sound mass transit. 4) Can Americans understand the need to collectivize/protect their own wealth-the results of their own labor- for real long term jobs creation. |

Re: The Crisis
Good questions.

Every day people, yes. The rulers, no. Re: Job Crisis Fact Sheet
Very simply had the nomenclatura in DC actually given a damn about the folks in middle America (true be known its worse than not giving a damn- they actively want lots of pain out there. Pain helps keep the sheep compliant) economic demand could have been boosted by a means as simple putting cash directly in the hands of ordinary Americans rather than in the vaults of international banksters.

Yes, as many people know, the laws are already on the books, dating from back during the time of the 1980's S & L debacle. If those laws had been followed, ordinary Americans would be able to put food on the table and keep the lights on. The reason we didn't have as grave a Depression as we are facing now in 2010 is that during the late eighties and nineties "The further a society drifts from Truth, the more it will hate those who speak it." Re: Job Crisis Fact Sheet
Big Lies, Little Lies
Phantom Jobs By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS If we cannot trust what the government tells us about weapons of mass destruction, terrorist events, and the reasons for its wars and bailouts, can we trust the government’s statement last Friday that the US economy gained 151,000 payroll jobs during October? Apparently not. After examining the government’s report, statistician John Williams (shadowstats.com) reported that the jobs were “phantom jobs†created by “concurrent seasonal factor adjustments.†In other words, the 151,000 jobs cannot be found in the unadjusted underlying data. The jobs were the product of seasonal adjustments concocted by the BLS. As usual, the financial press did no investigation and simply reported the number handed to the media by the government. snip The BLS household survey measures the number of people with jobs. The same October that reported 151,000 new payroll jobs reported, according to the household survey, a loss of 330,000 jobs. snip http://www.counterpunch.org/roberts11082010.html |

Re: Job Crisis Fact Sheet
Probably not really phantom jobs. You need to check and see if they just followed Obama to India first

They are very decent numbers to help people understand the grave matter facing us. However, I think that you are wrong to examine the issue in terms of the 700+ billion dollar "stimulus. The big problem with our economy right now is not whether or not that stimulus was too big or too small, but rather its relationship in terms of the AWESOME, OVERWHELMING AMOUNTS OF MONEY that were directed to the Big Financial Players. The CNN Bailout Tracker has for months tried to let Americans know that over 11 Trillion bucks has been handed over DIRECTLY to the Biggest players on Wall Street. And there were NO stipulations as to what this money gets used for. "The further a society drifts from Truth, the more it will hate those who speak it." George Orwell |

Re: Job Crisis Fact Sheet
Wow there is not much I can add to this thread. There is some great stuff on here.
I will say this though, the situation is worse than you think. 10% is not the actual unemployment rate. That's just the people on unemployment. The actual numbers vary depending on who you believe, between 17 and 22%. Yes 1 in 5 Americans is out of work and god knows how many are underemployed. |

So many are not counted to begin with. Like the college grad who didn't work in order to get good grades while still in school or the older person whose last job was over four years ago. Who wouldn't be tired of looking for work while they are continually being told that they cannot be hired as the insurance premiums on older workers makes it hard for most employers to hire them.
